My dad and I went to see Angels Spring Training at Tempe Diablo Stadium. We woke up at 4:30 AM to catch our flight which boarded at 6:15. The flight only lasted 55 minutes. When we arrived, my dad and I took a Lyft to our hotel. It was a Courtyard Marriot. The Courtyard was finished in 2017.
We didn’t know what we would do on Saturday, so we went to see Shohei Otani pitch. He is known as the Babe Ruth of Japan. Before the game, there was a live band.
There was a lot of Japenese media, and they televised the game in Japan.
Otani is pitching in the picture below.
When he walked onto the field, Otani had a translator because he can’t speak much English.
Since it was Spring Training, they weren’t as strict about seating. We never even sat in the seats we bought. Passing the concession stand, there were ladies who sang “Hot Dog.” That probably did generate more sales than normal.
Otani wasn’t as good as everyone thought he would be. That might be because he needs to get used to his team. The Angels ended up winning that game. It was against the Brewers.
There was another one the next day against the Padres.
Otani didn’t pitch that game, though. The Angels still won. We met some of our friends at that game. They had to leave after the third inning.
Going to Arizona was fun even though I was only there for three days.
They were playing the Texas Rangers. When we went into the stadium, we got Rebel Pilot Rally Monkeys for free. We bought Dippin’ Dots ice cream and headed to our seats. We were there when the entertainment began.
Darth Vader, R2-D2, and C3-PO came on the field! They were followed by Chewbacca, Kylo Ren, and Princess Leia.
They got off the field while a kid dressed up as C3-PO called, “Play ball!”
When the batters were up, the Angels faces were photoshopped with the clothing of Star Wars good guys. The Rangers, on the other hand, looked like Stormtroopers. They played a funny clip of Yoda saying, “Do, or do not, there is no try.” It showed baseball saves and fails.
There was not much excitement until the 4th inning when the Angels scored 2 runs. Then the Rangers scored 2 runs. The Rangers scored another 2 runs putting them ahead. The Angels came back with 4 runs so they were ahead by 2! Finally, the Rangers scored 1 more run making the final 6-7. The Angels won!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you don’t already know, I went to Arizona. On day two, we went to Angels Spring Training at Tempe Diablo Stadium.
The Angels were playing the Diamondbacks. Our friends, Blane and Makela, were there. We got seats in the Party Patio. It has free hot dogs, hamburgers, salad and drinks. Later, they brought out dessert.
In the first inning, the Diamondbacks didn’t score. When the Angels were up, Kole Calhoun hit a single and then Albert Pujols hit a two run home run. The Angels scored two more that inning. About halfway through the game, the Angels were winning seven to one. The Diamondbacks tried to make a comeback by scoring three more runs. Fortunately, it didn’t work. I do not mean to offend any Diamondbacks fans, but I was glad the Angels won. That day was very fun.
We had a private tour of Angel Stadium with a group of friends.
While outside we learned that Angel Stadium and Fenway Park, to list two, each have a Mickey Mouse because they won a World Series. We started at the 2002 World Series Case. Then the group went up the elevators. Floor 2 was almost employees only. Our tour guide told us that her favorite time in the press conference room was during the drafting. We went to the FOX sports press box. Finally, we went to the Gene Autry Suite. It had a real Rod Carew jersey! Then we took the elevator down to the visiting team room. It was cool, but from what we heard the Angels room is nicer. Then came the best part… We went to the Angels dugout! After the tour we bought some hats in the gift shop. Both the Angel Stadium and Fenway Park tours were amazing.
